For Dad

Howard “Bud” Nagel
January 17, 1939 – May 23, 2012

Nagel, Howard “Bud”, born January 17, 1939 passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton, CA with his loving wife of 34 years Sharlynn and devoted family by his side after a valiant battle against coronary heart disease and pulmonary fibrosis.

He is survived by his son, Ken, daughters Ashlee, and Lisa, daughter in law Shara, his brother Kevin USMC Ret., sister in law Kris, sister in law Carol, nephews Matthew Gunnery Sgt USMC, Kurt,  niece Carol, grandchildren, Alyssa, Joshua, Daniel, Paul, Dana, and three great grandchildren.  Bud was preceded in death by his beloved parents Howard “Bud” Nagel II, and Rhea (Hackett) Nagel, and his brothers Mike Nagel, and Patrick Nagel.

Growing up poor in the post-depression era, Bud learned to be resourceful, hardworking and always grateful for the small things. On his 17th birthday, Bud entered the US Navy and served in Vietnam from 1956-1959. Like his father before him, Bud loved the newspaper business and became an “Ad Man” spending the majority of his 40 year career in advertising at the LA Times, and the PennySaver. Bud loved giving back to the community from helping build his Chabad, to founding an annual Christmas banquet for foster children and parents. After “retiring,” always challenging himself, he began a new career as a Real Estate agent.

Bud enjoyed sailing, traveling, (especially his trips to Israel), jazz, and Sunday brunches with the Gospel choir at the House of Blues.  He taught us how to enjoy a fine wine and a good glass of scotch – neat.

Bud was a true gentleman and a gentle man – his wisdom, kindness, friendship, and his love will be missed by all the hearts he has touched. He lived with passion and passed with dignity.

In his final words, in a true testament to his character he wanted us to know;

“ L’Chaim!  Life is good ”

Bud’s family members ask that you honor him by smiling, give more than you expect to receive, accept people for who they are and most importantly – turn to someone you love, right now, hug them and tell them so. These are some of the qualities he possessed and the world needs more of.

Many thanks to his doctors and especially the Nurses at St. Jude’s Hospital; true angels on earth.

Services were performed by Rabbi Dovid Eliezrie, along with military honors at Mt. Olive Memorial Park Costa Mesa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to the North County Chabad Center of Yorba Linda
